Oregon State University: Beavers, Biology of Pandora, and Facebook Grammar Debates

Welcome to Oregon State University (OSU)—where beavers are the ultimate mascot, sustainability is a way of life, and students can take pop culture classes that ask the hard-hitting questions, like "Is Facebook a Noun or a Verb?" (Answer: both. But also neither?) and "Exploring the Biology of Pandora", just in case James Cameron ever needs expert consultants for the next Avatar sequel.

With over 32,000 students, 4,700 faculty, and 400+ student clubs, OSU is a place where you can try new things, develop skills, and meet fellow students who are just as passionate about research, the environment, and maybe even cryptids (this is Bigfoot country, after all).

If you’re an INTO OSU (their program to help intertnational students) student, the International Living and Learning Center (ILLC) will be your home base, with advisors, classes, and support all in one place. And for those seeking peaceful reflection, the campus has plenty of quiet spaces for religious and cultural traditions—or just escaping midterm stress.

Famous Beavers (a.k.a. Alumni Who Made It Big)

OSU has produced some serious talent, including:

  • Gary Payton (The Glove, NBA legend, defensive mastermind, and trash-talking icon).

  • Linus Pauling (two-time Nobel Prize-winning chemist, proving OSU produces geniuses, too).

  • Jade Carey (Olympic gymnast and gold medalist, flipping her way into history).

Clearly, OSU students know how to make a splash—on the court, in the lab, or on the global stage.

What Makes OSU Stand Out?

1. OSU Advantage, Innovation at Work: The OSU Advantage program helps connect students with startups, research opportunities, and economic development initiatives. Basically, it’s like LinkedIn, but with actual hands-on experience (and fewer awkward connection requests).

2. Cutting-Edge Research: With $450 million in annual research funding, OSU is a research powerhouse. Whether you want to study robotics, forestry, climate change, or how to make the perfect Marionberry pie (we assume someone’s researching this), OSU has opportunities to get involved.

3. Sustainability is a Big Deal Here: OSU isn’t just talking the talk—it’s walking the walk (probably on a campus path made of recycled materials). From comprehensive recycling programs to green energy initiatives, OSU has been recognized as a leader in sustainability. So if saving the planet is on your to-do list, you’ll feel right at home.

4. A Marine Science Paradise: OSU is home to the Hatfield Marine Science Center, a hands-on research facility on the Oregon coast where students can study marine ecosystems, track sea life, and maybe even make friends with an octopus (we’re not saying it’s possible, but we’re also not ruling it out).

5. Diversity and Inclusion at the Forefront: OSU is dedicated to fostering an inclusive campus with resources like the Multicultural Center, Women’s Center, and student organizations focused on diversity and equity. No matter your background, you’ll find a supportive and welcoming community here.

By the Numbers

  • Degrees Offered: 88 bachelor's programs

  • Undergraduate Enrollment: 26,644

  • Acceptance Rate (Class of 2024): 89% (Go Beavs!)

  • SAT Range: 1120-1370

Translation: OSU is an accessible and welcoming university where students can get a world-class education, make meaningful connections, and maybe even argue about grammar on Facebook for course credit.
